Bank or Cut?
Even though you're not playing a game of bankshot billiards you sometimes
find yourself in the position of having the option of making a bankshot to
pocket your next ball or you may find yourself scraping by with a cut shot.
When you are one shot shy of celebrating yet another a victorious billiards
game you will have these two alternatives going through your head. In the
words of Harry Callahan, you'll find yourself asking “Do I feel lucky?”
There's a natural tendency to think the bankshot would be easier but
statistically speaking, you're probably better better off performing the
cut. You may make the bank nine out of ten times, but you are faithfully
performing your practice
drills you are probably just as likely to make the cut. What you are
doing by making the cut shot is reducing the variables
and increasing your control of the object ball's
trajectory.
With the cut, you control the exact point of contact and the object
ball should hasten its way across the table to its intended pocket. With a
bankshot, you have several variables that can affect your intended outcome.
These include the condition of the pool table surface, the quality of the
rubber in the bumper (which can affect your ball speed and trajectory), and
any ill effects of misplaced English .
If you take the advice of Mr. Miagi, and “Focus, Daniel-san” you will make
the 8-ball with the cut instead of the bankshot and your opponent will have
the distinct honor of providing their superior racking skills (practice
makes perfect) for your next break.
